Etienne is Pastel’s new Branch Manager in Cape Town. For our customers in the Mother City, here’s some insight into what makes the man tick … When and where were you born? I was born in Springs in Gauteng. It was a warm December day in a year before TV existed in South Africa... What was your first job? My working life started at Klein Constantia wine farm. I was responsible for sticking name labels onto wine bottles and packing them into crates. Unfortunately, there was no drinking on the job! Describe your current job: As the branch manager, my overall responsibility is to boost the bottom line. But this can only be completed successfully if I improve on, develop and protect the business. It’s also imperative to preserve the company’s integrity, ethics, reputation and goodwill. Which piece of technology/gadget do you wish you had invented? The iPhone. I know it’s not a very original choice but you have to admit that it’s a fantastic piece of technology that has made Apple a lot of money. Which piece of technology or gadget can you not live without? My mobile phone. When our clients need me, I have to be available. What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received? If you really want to find yourself, lose yourself in the service of others. Which three people (dead or alive) would you invite to dinner and why? Mahatma Ghandi. I find it fascinating that a relatively simple person can be such an extraordinary leader and I am really motivated by his positive and logical outlook on life. What are your hobbies? I love taking my kids walking in the Helderberg Nature Reserve. It’s outdoor fun with a bit of exercise so a great experience all round. What’s the last good thing you saw on TV? The last season (and especially last episode) of Grey’s Anatomy. Can you finish the following sentences please… Before I die, I want to live! My greatest hope for the future is a political one; that our current and future leaders will make sound decisions, admit their mistakes and put the interests of their supporters and the country ahead of their personal agendas. |
